  • Goals for her new position at Harvard to influence education to better educate the  21st century workforce

BIOGRAPHY: Mary Lee Kennedy has arrived at her  Senior Associate Provost for the Harvard Library after almost seven years as Executive Director, Knowledge and Library Services at Harvard Business School. She has global experience in multi-national corporations and international organizations including Microsoft Corporation where she was Director, Knowledge Network Group, and Digital Equipment Corporation where she led the Information Research Services and Corporate Library Group after working as an Information Scientist at Sherritt Inc. in Edmonton, Alberta. She began her professional career at  Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan as Deputy Director, Library and Information Services.

    Mary Lee Kennedy opened her comments about her career path and ideas on the role of information and knowledge with an unequivocal assertion about the importance of persistent efforts to leverage knowledge and information resources to benefit all. From her first position as Deputy Director of the Univ. Autonoma de Yucatan in Mexico to information and knowledge management leadership roles at corporations Sherritt Inc., Digital Equipment Corp. and Microsoft, Mary Lee has created and executed strategies to bring technology to bear in making critical institutional and published content accessible to constituents. More recently that extended to making collaboration among experts another priority.

    Both at Harvard Business School where she engineered a major overhaul of the relationship of business scholarship to the school and its faculty, and the entire Harvard University community where she has served on committees to streamline and improve intra-departmental coordination of knowledge resources, Mary Lee has provided thought leadership for how libraries should function in academia.

    Those in attendance asked many questions about how the Harvard Libraries function now and will change in the future. In her new role as Senior Associate Provost, she will be working toward opening communication channels among librarians, faculty committees and the information technology group to ensure a consistent palette of interdisciplinary offerings across the 73 libraries at Harvard University. Presenting a unified and high-value intranet for access to all of Harvard’s information resources will be achieved through the coordination of ideas and assets that exist in all departments. All of her efforts will be directed toward ensuring “that the libraries remain closely aligned with Harvard’s scholarly mission, even as they innovate to open frontiers for research libraries around the globe.”

    Clearly envious of the mission’s ambition and the existing foundation on which it will be built, this opened our eyes to what the vision of knowledge as power can look like. For more information on the Harvard Library Transition click here
